The Deadly Beauty Of Serpents
In the center of Tanzania, you will find a dual venomous boomslang. The word boomslang is resulting from the Dutch and Afrikaans languages and translates to mean “tree snake”. Therefore you can figure out that this snake is an arboreal creature.
Tourists apply for travel visas and Tanzania visas just because this is the only country to see these beauties. Sure, a few might like to travel to hike the mountain Kilimanjaro, but with much hype around these green sexual dimorphic beauties it is hard not to get engrossed in their grasp.
Within pop culture the boomslang is regularly referenced. Everything from a type of computer mouse to a Marvel comic villain all take the boomslang’s name. Still, one of the most infamous references is from “Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets”. When making the famous polyjuice potion, the shedded skin of a boomslang snake is used as one of the special components.
Stephen King and Agatha Christie have used the venom from the boomslang to kill off some characters in their famous individual novels. Possibly, it gets back to the dual venom of the boomslang. The boomslang carries a venom that strikes your nervous system and another that attacks your blood. So if you are struck by this snake, chances are pretty darn good that you won’t make it through the next day.
Maybe the intoxicating magnificence of these serpents is why tourists get Tanzania visas and travel to this desolate place. Although it is atypical to be bitten by such a timid snake, it can and does happen, so stay on guard. Most injuries come to tourists, with their travel visas and cameras in tow, not giving this snake enough breathing room when snapping photos. Also it is common for tourists to think due to the rear fang nature of these snakes, that they are unable to really bite that much. This is just not correct. The boomslang is able to unhinge its jaw to a 90 degree angle in a blink of an eye. Also, due to the snake having rear fangs, it has little control over the force to release its venom, and therefore always injects it, unlike snakes that are front fanged.
This serpent is from the family colubridae, which is unusual considering that most of the snakes belonging to this family are non-venomous. Yet once again, don’t fall into this lousy laymen form of herpetology. Never make the mistake of handling a reptile if you aren’t sure of the potency of the venom. The slightest error can result in your instant death.
