Old Radio Shows For The 21st Century
The 1930's-1950's was the Golden Age Of Radio. Almost every night you could huddle around the fire and be thrilled by shows such as Suspense, Escape, Inner Sanctum, and The Whistler, to name just a handful. It is no surprise that this became known as the Golden Age of Radio.
When it came to the 1960s these old radio shows died out completely. It wasn't a sudden death. It started to die our from the early 1950s and had pretty much gone by the time the last episode of Yours Truly Johnn Dollar was broadcast in 1962.
In the 1970s and early 80s there was a brief renaissance when Himan Brown produced CBS Radio Mystery Theater, which ran from January 6th, 1974 through to December 31st 1982. Since then however radio has not been the same.
"Tales from the Morgue" is one show however which did stand out.
This is a show where an elderly morgue attendant sells a series of short stories.
The stories Chet relates are all quite fanciful. They deal with topics that could be classified supernatural and science fiction. They border on outrageous but that is how they are meant to be.
Elmer Korn is a caracter who features in many of these stories and always seems to end up in interesting and insane situations.
The show can be considered as rather off-beat and even the writer admit the stories are humours and there are may recurring characters which listeners enjoy.
This series was created and produced by M&J Audio Theater. The M stands for Mark Sawyer and the J is for Jay Reel.
These are friends who met at school in 1977. X Minus One, Lum and Abner and Gunsmoke are examples of old time radio shows that they both enjoyed and started their interest in radio drama. One can hear these influences in every story from the subject matter and the character voices, to the plots.Its not only the hosts themselves that are very similar to stories such as "The Inner Sanctum" and Himan Brown but the same creaking door opening to the show is used as well as the same pleasant dream endings.
Mark Sawyer and J Reel collaborated on as many as 20 characters in these stories, possibly more. It is clear that Jay plays more important characters as he was the voice of Chet Chetter, Elmer Korn, The Sheriff Roland and Gale Headrush Taylor. Mark only admits to being the voice of Cecil Farris and various incidental characters.
Mark and Jay produced the first Chet Chetter story, "The Highway of Death" in 1989. It was born from a series of ninety-five episodes, which they recorded between 1980 to 1995. They call it "The Conofrof Saga".
Once National Public Radio had seen "The Highway of Deadth" after they had submitted it they ordered 3 more stories to be written which surprised Mark and Jay. In 1990 "The Highway of Death" and the other 3 stories broadcast on NPR Playhouse. The following year NPR ordered nine more installments of "Tales From the Morgue". All 13 episodes were played in 1992 as a full series.
Since this a few production houses have found audiences for their own shows online.
It is strange how things can go full circle. From the days of old time radio shows to the internet today.
In the Golden Age of Radio there was a demand for these hight quality old radio shows and it shows that this is still the case today. The medium has changed in the way we listen to audio but it seems that the actual content hasn't change as much as some might think.
