This is an essential question for any self study course, even the more expensive options like Rosetta Stone and Pimsleur, but often it is not actually the course that is to blame but the attitude of the person using the course. Regardless of the type of course or software that you are using to learn a second language, the two key factors that will ensure you are successful are consistency and focus. Hey, this applies to anything new that you may be learning but it really is the first rule when it comes to learning a new language.
In effect, human brains are wired to pick up languages. You actually can't fail to learn a new language unless you allow yourself to fail. People let themselves fail as they are unwilling to leave what they consider is their comfort zone.
It works as so. You have been learning one language since you first heard your mother's voice. You know how it works and you can express your inner thoughts and feelings with this language. You rely on it essentially as most everyone needs to talk. You are emotionally commited to this language.
