When Children Learn Times Tables Well This Helps Develop Maths Confidence
What most people do not know about is that very many adults feel very unsure of them selves when it comes to maths. For children an anxiety over maths can affect the ability to progress, even with the need to learn times tables.
Being anxious over maths subjects can badly affect the ability to remember and clearly being less confident of their ability to do maths. The result of less confidence is often poorer results and progress in school. A higher level of confidence can result in achievement and success.
This is so important for when your children learn times tables.Broadly speaking the following factors can make it more difficult to develop maths confidence. One – answers to questions are often given with all to see and it can be embarrassing, two - just not knowing the correct answers to questions and three - having to answer in a very short time.
Marilyn Curtain-Philips in her brilliant article – The causes and Prevention of Math Anxiety, says that children would do much better in a school environment and classroom which has been properly planned. This means planning the class in such away as to help children to feel more confident and is a place where wrong answers to questions are managed in a helpful and encouraging way.
I’m not in charge of the classroom I can hear you say, what can I do to help? Of course you as a parent are not in control of the classroom, however, there is one place where you do have control. Where? Where you live, your home!
This is where you can really help your children with their maths confidence. You have the tools at hand. When your children learn times tables so they know them well this can result in greater maths confidence in general. What can you do to help them learn times tables?
One thing is provide them with audio times tables worksheets. With these there is testing involved, however, there is no embarrassment as the answers are given in your home and not with the class looking on.
No getting answers wrong in public and if a correction is needed no fuss. This is a really big thing, before being tested using audio times tables worksheets, your children can learn times tables so well that they easily have an Instant Recall ability to answer the questions.
How?
Simple, by using an Instant Recall method to learn times tables that uses a mixture of colour, images, speaking and listening. When these things are done your children will learn times tables really well, helping to grow their maths confidence in other areas.
What is the conclusion to all this? With audio times tables worksheets and an Instant Recall method used to learn times tables the time pressure that is part of maths tests at school is not there, the public pressure to get the answers right is not there, and the experience of not instantly knowing the answers to maths questions is not there.
Each of these points leads to a child who can learn times tables so well that they know them as well as they know their own names. And what is the other result for your children?
Because they have done so well in one area of maths and been able to learn times tables, they can feel more confident about learning other areas of maths.
