Tuskegee Tests Echoed By Guatemalan Sexually Transmitted Disease Experiments
There was a recent revelation made. The United States of America government participated in human tests on unwilling Guatemalans. Our government has apologized to the Guatemalan government officially. The studies echo the infamous Tuskegee experiments, where African American males were infected with the very same sexually transmitted disease. Both studies have been over for decades. The Tuskegee experiments ran for 40 years. John C. Cutler, a man who could loosely be described as a "doctor" took part in both studies. Approved to perform Guatemalan study
In the early 20th century, treatment for sexually transmitted disease was not as simple as today. Prescriptions are available to those infected. It only takes a couple hours of your time to get. In 1946, before penicillin had been approved for use, the U.S. Public Health Service, the National Institute of Health, the Pan American Health Sanitary Institute and the Guatemalan government approved an exploration on the effects of syphilis, according the MSNBC. One man was in charge of the study. Dr. John Cutler was chosen. Male prisoners and female prisoners were amongst the 696 test subjects. Some had the disease injected when others were encouraged to make an effort to get the disease on their own. There weren't even a third of the subjects treated for the disease. The study concluded in 1948.
What studies were done with the Tuskegee syphilis
Hardly any person knows about the Tuskegee Studies. That is because American is ashamed of that part of history. African Americans from the South were observed with the disease between 1932 and 1972. From Alabama there were 399 male subjects. The United States of America Public Health Service worked for making the exploration happen. It does not like knowing it happened though. However, there is a slight difference. The Tuskegee patients already had syphilis. The patients from Guatemalan with STDs were given the disease instead. Another glaring difference is that up to two-thirds of the Guatemalan patients were treated. Penicillin treatment was not given to many. The Tuskegee patients did not get it at all. 1947 was when penicillin begun being used. It wasn't before then. The experiment ran until 1972.
Having to say sorry
It is extremely hard to say the human experimentation can just be excused. Apologies to the Guatemalan people flooded in. These came from Health and Human Services Director Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and President Obama. That is something like a start.
