The Origins Of Door Locks
Since the oldest ages, there's been a necessity to protect one’s belongings and houses from robbery and break-ins. In the early centuries, tactics like using an intricate knot were employed, where the knot would have to be untied in a particular sequence, otherwise it would merely become more tightly twisted, not necessarily the most secure answer, but in the absence of proper door locks, it needed to do.
Of course the nobility and other rich people had troops and garrisons of troops to safeguard their silverware and other precious items. All that was standing between pillagers and the noble valuables was a pair of crossed axes or swords in the threshold. Despite the fact that a stealthy intruder in the night, had needed simply to wait until the security guards had fallen asleep, before sneaking by these people to plunder which ever wealth might lie within without any noise which could awaken the slumbering guards.
A long way from the modern door locks that we take for granted in our present age. Locks have for ages been taken for granted, sealing your front entrance, garage or vehicle is second nature to people, even small children are familiar with their functionality and function, but it wasn’t always the situation. Early man needed to keep watch over his important belongings, or have other people do so on their behalf in their absence. There is no exact account of when the first lock mechanism was employed, or by who, examples of ancient timber locks have been discovered, but nothing like the locking devices of nowadays, and definitely nothing similar to the door locks located all through an average modern residence.
It wasn’t before 1778, when the notorious Robert Barron patented a young version of the tumbler locking mechanism. This might seem uneventful, yet to set it in perspective the Declaration of Independence was agreed upon in 1776. That’s two years after the United States proclaimed its autonomy from England, before professional engineering and patenting of a lock had taken place. That isn't to say that there were absolutely no locks prior to Barron’s patent, merely that up until that time the design of locks hadn't advanced to the stage where someone had made a cutting-edge advancement to the design of locks.
Following this landmark, over the years a growing number of famous locksmiths began to patent their innovations in locking mechanism technology, proclaiming that they had now come up with the most secure and safe lock. During this period, a large locksmith professional group had developed, with rival locksmiths challenging one another to pick each others locks, often with a cash reward to the individual who could crack their locks.
The English, following a break in at a government building, and seeing the value of developing locks further, put up a challenge for somebody to make a lock that could only be opened by its original key, and made available a cash reward to the person who could do it.
Jeremiah Chubb claimed the prize in 1818, with his detector locking mechanism which extensive on Browns earlier efforts and was able to produce a locking mechanism that could only be opened by one key. It seemed to be this development and subsequent work subsequently, which resulted in the door locks that we know nowadays.
